GapMaps spending data powered by CommBank iQ Retail Spend Insights for CY2024

May 2025
Analysis of the latest GapMaps spending data powered by CommBank iQ Retail Spend Insights for calendar year (CY2024) reveals many fascinating trends and variations.

GapMaps spending data powered by Commbank iQ Retail Spend Insights is one of Australia’s most accurate, detailed and reliable small area household spending datasets.

For example, Townsville and Darwin have very high spend per capita on Outdoor/Adventure and Sports retail, while residents in the outer suburbs in most capital cities spend significantly more on Fast Food/Take-away than the city-wide population. Young inner-city dwellers spend a very large proportion of their wallet on Food Catering and Apparel, while Supermarket expenditure tends to be relatively inelastic to income but varies greatly based on geography (Sydney is much lower than Brisbane and Perth for example).

We’ve undertaken a shallow dive into the Fitness Clubs and Gyms category to explore recent trends in this growing category of consumer spending.

Australians spend on average $150 per capita on gyms/fitness each year, with significant regional variations generally around age and income but also climate/lifestyle. It is worth noting this is an average across all persons. Depending on the source, around 25 – 30% of Australians aged 15 years or older frequently use gym/fitness facilities.

In South East Queensland, Gold Coast residents spend around $190 per capita, while Sunshine Coast residents spend $200 per capita, with average spend in Greater Brisbane of $155 per capita.

At a more micro-level, Inner City Brisbane residents spend around $330 per capita, while there are suburbs on the Gold Coast such as Main Beach, Broadbeach, Broadbeach Waters, and Mermaid Beach where average spend per capita exceeds $300 per capita, where the populations consist of much higher proportions of young, affluent singles and couples. Whether they are more health conscious (or is it image conscious?) – well that’s a debate for another day.

This significant nuance in spending patterns emphasises the importance of localised insights when assessing market potential. Fitness Clubs and Gyms is just one of more than 80 Commbank IQ spending categories available on the GapMaps platform, providing comprehensive data for any location in Australia. By transforming these data into strategic insights, we empower businesses to assess market potential, identify opportunities, and make informed location decisions with confidence.
